Parish History
The Portuguese Community of Vancouver already existed before 1960. The first group of Portuguese immigrants arrived in Vancouver in 1954: other groups arrived in this same year in other parts of the Province of British Columbia.
Wherever the Portuguese have gone, during their long history of discovery, colonization, and immigration, they have always taken their language, culture and religion.
The first immigrants left their families in Portugal, and in search of work, they faced the sacrifice of living in a land without knowing the language and dedicating themselves to the hardest jobs.
Gradually, as the living conditions improved, they started calling their families. By the year 1959, the presence of Portuguese was noted in some churches, such as the Church of St. Paul. As soon as the Archbishop of Vancouver, Dom Duke, became aware of the presence of a Portuguese community, he asked the Congregation of the Scalabrinian Fathers to allow Fr. Gerónimo Angeli to celebrate a Mass in Portuguese at St. Paul's Church.
The Portuguese Catholic Mission was attached to the parish “Our Lady of Sorrows” where Fr. Gerónimo resided and provided his pastoral assistance to the Portuguese Colony. The mission was called “Nossa Senhora de Fátima” due to the Portuguese people's devotion to the Virgin Mary.
In the early years, few people attended mass. From August 1962 to September 1965 the mission was in charge of Mr. Fr. Delizio José Artico. During this time the Portuguese community grew a lot, and the need to have their own church and social center was already mentioned. The priest in charge of the mission served the Portuguese residents in Victoria, Okanagan and Kitimat spiritually.
In September 1965, Fr. Gerónimo Angeli again assumed the assistance of the Mission. Mass attendance was already very numerous and another mass began to be said at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish. It was at that time that there was already serious talk about buying a church or building a new one; a campaign was organized to collect funds for these purposes. The number of baptisms was already very high, many proxy marriages and catechesis for children began to be organized.
At the beginning of June 1967, Fr. Aquilino Magagnin took over the religious assistance of the Portuguese Catholic Mission; Masses began to be said at St. Patrick Church and at the Church of the Hungarians, Our Lady of Hungary.
The Mission began to be organized as a Parish; the number of those who became members of the Mission increased; and in 1967 he was elected the first Parish Council.
In May 1968 a party was organized in honour of Our Lady of Fatima at the Church of the Italians, “Our Lady of Sorrows. In June 1968, these terraces on which the Church and the parish house were purchased. A major campaign was started to raise funds for the construction of a church and at the beginning of 1969, the projects and a loan for construction were approved.
On June 2, 1969, construction work on the Church and the Hall began.
On November 9, 1969, the first mass in this Church was said; only the structures were finished, the finishing was still to be done; on this same date, the hall was used for the social part of the party. This Church was not used again regularly until Christmas of the same year.
In February 1970, Fr. Aquilino Magagnin was replaced by Fr. José Ponti, who, for months, had already assisted Fr. Aquilino in the assistance of the Portuguese Catholic mission.
The blessing and consecration of this Church were held on June 18, 1972, on the Feast of Santo Cristo, by His Excellency. Bishop James F. Carney, our Archbishop. On this occasion, the Portuguese Catholic mission officially became a parish.
With the construction of this Church and hall, the Portuguese community started to have its own place to praise God.
The Church's facilities were suitable for social and educational activities, such as meetings, Portuguese school, English catechism, as well as for community and family celebrations.
All of this that we celebrate today, was Parish for the collaboration of the community, the members of the Parish and those who responded to the campaigns, together with the members of the councils, the Lords and the religious authorities.
That is why we say today that our community is to be congratulated, and we thank God in the first place for the success of the works undertaken here. We cannot but thank the tireless work of Messrs. Fathers and all those men and women who worked and collaborated, many of whom still continue to do so today.
História da Paróquia
A Comunidade Portuguesa de Vancouver já existia antes do ano 1960. O primeiro grupo de imigrantes Portugueses chegou a Vancouver pelo ano 1954: outros grupos chegaram neste mesmo ano a outras partes da Provincia de British Columbia.
Para onde quer que os Portugueses tenham ido, durante sua longa história nas descobertas, colonização, e imigração, sempre levaram sua lingua, cultura e religião.
Os primeiros imigrantes deixaram em Portugal suas famílias, e em busca de trabalho enfrentaram o sacrifício de viver numa terra sem conhecerem a lingua e se dedicando aos trabalhos mais árduos.
Aos poucos, assim que as condições de vida melhoraram foram chamando suas famílias. Pelo ano 1959 foi notada a presença de Portugueses em algumas igrejas, como na Igreja St. Paul. Assim que o Senhor Arcebispo de Vancouver de então Dom Duke tomou conhecimento da presença duma comunidade Portuguesa pediu a Congregação dos Padres Escalabrinianos que permitisse ao Senhor Pe. Gerónimo Angeli celebrar uma missa em Português na Igreja St. Paul.
A Missão Católica Portuguesa foi anexa à Paróquia “Our Lady of Sorrows” onde o Pe. Gerónimo residía e prestava sua assistência pastoral à Colonia Portuguesa. A missão, foi chamada “Nossa Senhora de Fátima” devido a devoção do povo Português à Virgem Maria.
Nos primeiros anos eram poucas as pessoas que frequentavam a missa. Desde Agosto 1962 até Setembro 1965 a missão, esteve a cargo do Sr. Pe. Delizio José Artico. Durante esta época a comunidade Portuguesa cresceu muito, e já se falave da necessidade de terem uma igreja própria e um centro social. O sacerdote a cargo da missão atendia espiritualmente os Portugueses residentes em Victoria, Okanagan e Kitimat.
Em Setembro 1965 o Pe. Gerónimo Angeli assumiu novamente a assistência da Missão. A assistência a missa já era muito numerosa e outra missa começou a ser rezada na Paróquia Our Lady of Sorrows. Foi nessa época que já se falava sériamente em comprar uma igreja ou em construir uma nova; um campanha foi organizada para recolher fundos para tais objectivos. O número de baptismos já era muito elevado, muitos casamentos por procuração e a catequese para crianças começou a ser organizada.
No comêço de junho, 1967, assumiu a assistência religiosa da Missão Católica Portuguesa o Sr. Pe. Aquilino Magagnin; as missa começaram a ser rezadas na Igreja St. Partick e na Igreja dos Húngaros, Our Lady of Hungary.
A Missão começou a ser organizada como uma Paróquia; aumentava o número dos que se tornavam membros da Missão; e em 1967 foi eleito primeiro Conselho Paroquial.
Em maio 1968 foi organizada uma festa em honra de Nossa Senhora de Fátima na Igreja dos Italianos, “Our Lady of Sorrows. Em junho 1968 forma comprados estes terremos sobre os quais estão a Igreja e casa Paroquial. Iniciou-se uma grande campanha para angariar fundos para a construção duma Igreja e no começo do ano 1969 foram aprovados os projectos e um empréstimo para a construção.
No dia 2 de junho 1969 foram iniciadas as obras de construção da Igreja e do Salão.
No dia 9 de novembro de 1969 foi rezada a primeira missa nesta Igreja; apenas as estruturas estavam terminadas, o acabamento estava todo por fazer; nesta mesma data o salão, foi usado para a parte social da festa. Esta Igreja só voltou a ser usada regularmente a partir do Natal do mesmo ano.
Em fevereiro 1970 o Sr. Pe. Aquilino Magagnin foi substituido pelo Sr. Pe. José Ponti que hà meses, já assistia a Pe. Aquilino na assistência da missão Católica Portuguesa.
A bênção e sagração desta Igreja foi realizada no dia 18 de junho 1972 na Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo, por sua Exa. Dom James F. Carney, nosso Arcebispo. Nesta oportunidade a missão Católica Portuguesa passou a ser oficialmente Paróquia.
Com a construção desta Igreja e salão, a comunidade Portuguesa passou a ter um lugar próprio para louvar a Deus.
As instalações da Igreja eram adequadas para atividades sociais e educacionais, como reuniões, escola de português, catecismo inglês, bem como para festas comunitárias e familiares.
Tudo isto que hoje festejamos, foi Paróquia pela colaboração da comunidade, dos membros da Paróquia e dos que responderam às campanhas, juntamente com os membros dos conselhos, dos Senhores padres e das autoridades religiosas.
Por isso dizemos hoje que nossa comunidade, está de parabéns, e agradecemos a Deus em primeiro lugar pelo bom êxito das obras aqui empreendidas. Não podemos deixar de agradecer o trabalho incansável dos Srs. Padres e a todos aqueles homens e mulheres que trabalharam e colaboraram, muitos dos quais ainda continuam a fazê-lo no dia de hoje.
